Google SketchUp Software Review

Review Summary
The design process has come a long way from 2-D plans on paper -- it is now possible, or even necessary, for 3-D plans to be produced through software like Google SketchUp.
Ron Hobbs, owner of Ron Hobbs Architecture, which works on commercial, institutional and urban planning projects, has been using SketchUp since 2001. He is currently using Version 6.4.112.
“I use it on every project I design. I use it to design with and also as a presentation tool. I use it with my laptop to make presentations to building committees, city councils, etc.,” said Hobbs. “It has totally eliminated the need to build study models of our projects.”
Hobbs said that after looking at similar software, SketchUp seemed the most user friendly -- and this CAD software has lived up to his expectations, as requires very little computer skills and can flexibly study all aspects of a design, he said. His one complaint with SketchUp is that the icons are confusing.
Hobbs praised SketchUp’s support lines. “I called with a major problem late on a Friday afternoon,” he said. “In a few minutes they helped me recover a drawing that I needed that weekend. Their support was great.”
Overall, Hobbs rated SketchUp software a perfect 10 out of 10 and recommended it to any architect or interior designer.

Eight years.
Commercial, institutional and urban planning.
I bought SketchUp at the AIA Convention in Denver in 2001. (SketchUp was originally developed in 2000 by @Last Software, which was subsequently acquired by Google in 2006.)
Approximately $300.
I use SketchUp software as a design and presentation tool.
It appeared to be easy to use and very user friendly.
SketchUp was completely compatible with the AutoCAD software that we were using.
Yes. I looked at several other products.
No. SketchUp was the first 3-D software that I used.
Four or five designers at my firm use SketchUp software.
I use SketchUp on every project I design. I use it to design with and also as a presentation tool. I use it with my laptop to make presentations to groups of people (building committees, city councils, etc.)
It has totally eliminated the need to build study models of our projects.
The flexibility to study all aspects of a design, inside and outside.
For the purchase cost, it has been far and away the best value of anything that I’ve purchased.
I believe the current icons are confusing. The original version icons were better.
There are numerous features that I’ve not used. Just like AutoCAD, SketchUp offers more features than we normally use. I’ll still discovering new tricks using SketchUp software.
I recommend SketchUp software to any architect or interior designer.
Very little.
No. I produced my first 3-D rendering in about four hours after I installed SketchUp software on my laptop at the Denver convention.
Yes. I called with a major problem late on a Friday afternoon. In a few minutes they help me recover a drawing that I needed that weekend. Their support was great.
Great.
Yes, I plan on getting Google SketchUp 7.
10.
