Microsoft Project

Microsoft has leveraged its expertise in business software to create Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007. This project management software application can be operated as a standalone program or as part of an organization's Office Project Server 2007, which delivers enterprise-level project management capabilities.

Not surprisingly, Project Professional integrates tightly with Microsoft's popular Office suite. The program's similarities to Office reduce training and support overhead, according to the Redmond, Washington-based vendor. Office Project Professional 2007 includes a Client Access License (CAL), which enables connection to Office Project Server 2007. The CAL also allows users to tap Microsoft Office Project Web Access, the thin developer's Web client.

Microsoft Office Project Standard 2007 features project management tools designed to let users manage projects more efficiently and effectively. Capabilities include project work, schedules, and finances, as well as project teams, coupled with reporting and guided planning tools, according to Microsoft. Users can convert data from existing Microsoft-based applications, such as Excel or Word, into their Project applications, cutting the time required to begin using Microsoft's project management software.

Set up is eased with a customizable tool that walks users through project creation, including assigning of tasks and resources, tracking and analyzing data, and reporting results. The program also includes toolbars, menus and other features designed to make even project-management neophytes productive quickly. Using its data, Project can create charts and graphs and output data to multiple file formats for reports or presentations, according to Microsoft.
