From AECbytes.com: Using ArchiCAD for remodels and additions

(Editor's note: This tip on using ArchiCAD to design remodels and additions is the fifth in a weekly series of blog posts about CAD and BIM software that comes to us from the very detailed technical tips on AECbytes.com. It is the first of four upcoming tips on using ArchiCAD, so stay tuned.)

There are several different strategies for using ArchiCAD for remodels and additions. But before you can start a project, you need to enter existing conditions and the new design while also managing the information shown on each drawing. ArchiCAD uses a layer management system to control what information is shown, which means users can create a unique system for each project that is easy to work with.

Within ArchiCAD’s layer management system, there are Layers and Layer Combinations that are set up to show what the user chooses for each drawing or each phase of work. The View definitions remember layer combinations, activate them automatically and make sure the style and information is correct for each drawing on the layout sheets. The Favorites feature remembers the settings of common elements, so the user can draw elements with the right layer and other parameter settings. Finally, the Eye-Dropper can be used to pick up settings for common elements and create a visual reference with the interactive Legends of Visual Favorites.

The first method for using ArchiCAD’s layer management system is to create separate files for the as-built and new remodel designs. In the second, the two versions are in the same file but copied to different stories. The third way is to add more layers to control the existing, demo and new elements. Lastly, the fourth method involves referencing the as-built version as a Hotlinked Module into the new Remodel PLN.
